Third Grade |
Third grade is an important year. It is the last of the lower primary grades and a transition to the upper elementary grades. Students are learning to become more responsible and independent. They are taught the learning process is just as important as the end product. A positive, structured classroom environment fosters creative and independent learners. As in second grade, the third-grade classroom is self contained. The curriculum includes math, language arts, social studies, science, and religion, as well as Spanish, music, physical education, computer skills, and library studies. Language Arts The language arts program includes spelling, reading, grammar, handwriting, and oral and written expression. The spelling program is faith based, incorporating Christian values with word usage, dictionary skills and phonics. The reading program focuses on reading comprehension, research skills, dictionary skills, phonics, and reading enjoyment. Students learn to use a variety of tools to evaluate what they read and relate it to their personal experiences. Grammar is comprised of oral and written language skills. Emphasis is placed on the mechanics of writing, parts of speech, and creative writing skills. Handwriting is a faith-based program which combines scripture verses with cursive skills. Students are expected to incorporate cursive writing into their daily assignments by the second semester. Mathematics This challenging program includes concepts ranging from basic computation to more complex problem solving skills. Some of these concepts include addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, measurement, converting measures, fractions, time, money, Roman numerals, geometry, and story problems. Students reinforce math skills through practice and the use of manipulatives. Social Studies Third grade covers geography, history, civics and government, economics, and multiculturalism within the context of local and global communities. Students gain an appreciation of multiculturalism through research and presentations. Science Science in third grade covers life science, earth science, and physical science. Students are immersed in the learning process through hands-on investigations and experiments throughout the year. Religion Students in religion learn about the Catholic faith in more depth. They explore faith, generally and their own, through scriptural readings, doctrine, traditions, and personal experience. Students become more familiar with the liturgy by actively participating in the school Masses. |
